Visually mediated valence effects in dialogue: an explorative study
نویسندگان
چکیده
This is an exploratory study investigating potential effects of emotional valence in images and their influence on conversation in the presence of the images. We used latent-semantic analysis to generalize valence ratings of Swedish words to a corpus of spoken conversations. Each utterance in the conversation was given a valence rating, which represented how emotionally positive or emotionally negative the utterance was. We found no effects that indicate that valenced images have an effect on conversations. However, we find that valenced images in general, and positive images in particular, were considered more helpful by the participants who engaged in the conversations. Additionally, we find no results that interlocutors align over time in their use of valenced language.

This study investigated the comparative effects of audio-visually prompted collaborative dialogue on the listening comprehension development of symmetrical, asymmetrical, and asymmetrical teacher-fronted EFL learner groups. Besides, it explored the attitude of the participants of the groups concerning the effectiveness of collaborative dialogue for their listening comprehension improvement. The...
متن کاملThe Effect of Visually-Mediated Collocations on the Elementary EFL Learners’ Vocabulary Learning
When vocabulary teaching is taken into account in EFL classes in our Iranian state primary schools, teachers generally prefer to use classical techniques. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of visually-mediated collocations on the elementary EFL learners’ vocabulary learning. In order to conduct this study, 60 students from two classrooms in an elementary class, participate...
متن کاملDifferential Patterns of Food Appreciation during Consumption of a Simple Food in Congenitally Anosmic Individuals: An Explorative Study
Food is evaluated for various attributes. One of the key food evaluation domains is hedonicity. As food is consumed, its hedonic valence decreases (due to prolonged sensory stimulation) and hedonic habituation results. The aim of the present study was to investigate changes in food pleasantness ratings during consumption of a simple food by individuals without olfactory experience with food as ...
متن کاملOdours Influence Visually Induced Emotion: Behavior and Neuroimaging
The present study was conducted to investigate the influence of olfaction on subjective valence intensity ratings of visual presentations. Pictures of five different categories (baby, flower, erotic, fear and disgust) were presented each being associated with five different odour conditions [no odour, low and high concentrations of phenylethyl alcohol (positive odour) and low and high concentra...
متن کاملExploring Features and Classifiers for Dialogue Act Segmentation
This paper takes a classical machine learning approach to the task of dialogue act segmentation. A thorough empirical evaluation of features, both used in other studies as well as new ones, is performed. An explorative study to the effectiveness of different classification methods is done by looking at 29 different classifiers implemented in WEKA. The output of the developed classifier is exami...
